“Zhuang Zhou once dreamed that he was a butterfly, fluttering about, content with himself and doing what he wants. […] Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakably Zhuang Zhou. But he did not know whether he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamed or whether he was a butterfly who dreamed that he was Zhuang Zhou.” (The Butterfly Dream of Zhuangzi)
Two identical figures stand on the stage. To all appearances, they resemble each other and yet their real selves are completely different. In the constant change of perspectives we see mirror images of two beings in everyday scenes up to life-threatening moments. Did one person create the other person? Who is real, who is fake? How do third parties react to the supposedly same person in the same situation?
Inspired by the Chinese philosopher and poet Zhuangzi and the theories of C.G. Jung and Sigmund Freud about the unconscious, Shel Yan creates a choreographic-theatrical evening in which she asks questions about the multifaceted nature of her own personality.
